Timothy Musso

Artist and author Timothy Musso grew up in the wild foothills of the Motherlode, just 20 miles from where gold was first discovered in California in 1848. After a childhood spent exploring the forests, rivers, and mountains of the Northern Sierra Nevada, Musso relocated to Southern California, an area which he now calls home. Observational drawing is at the center of Musso’s creative practice. In the deserts of the Southwest and elsewhere he has hiked and sketched his way through more than 4,000 miles of territory. His travel sketchbooks form the base upon which he tells stories in intricately detailed prints, drawings and books. His recent picture book, ‘Chasing the Sun’, received the Riverby Award in 2024—an award for natural history books for young readers.

Musso has just been awarded the Bull-Bransom Award by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, recognizing excellence in the field of children’s book illustration with a focus on nature and wildlife. The Museum will present Musso with this esteemed award at his session at the Jackson Hole Book Festival.
