
Born on Guam to a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman and his intrepid Hoosier wife, Candice attended more than half a dozen schools before graduating from high school. Her undergraduate degree in journalism is from the University of Illinois, and her law degree is from Georgetown University. After a career on Capitol Hill and in business, she earned a master’s degree in history with a concentration in military history from George Washington University and began her second career as a historian/writer.
Her first book, Lincoln's Generals' Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War for Better and for Worse (2016), won three national awards. Delivered Under Fire: Absalom Markland and Freedom's Mail (2023) garnered national awards for history and biography. She is currently working on her third Civil War biography.
